 Tick for mine extension

Tick for mine extension

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Mount Thorley Warkworth mine was this week granted a 12-year extension.

Operations will now continue at the Upper Hunter Valley mine until 2033 and mine management are determined to continue to work closely with the community during this time.

A public meeting regarding the project recognised noise and air quality and blasting management as residents’ concerns and stronger conditions were placed on the mine as a result.

“Mouth Thorley Warkworth continues to increase its commitment to reducing noise,” mine general manager of operations Cam Halfpenny said.

“We recognise that members of the community will have ongoing concerns about this extension and we are committed to working closely with them on ways we can continue to improve our management of impacts such as noise and dust.”

The Planning Assessment Commission gave the tick of approval for the extension following a 2½-year assessment process.

The reversal of a promise to preserve the forest.

The destruction of that forest.

The huge impacts to the Bulga community's health and social fabric.

The closure of public access road.

The increase in the Mining footprint over the Hunter catchment.

The local community opposition.

The total lack of concern for the community to be dismantled.

Show an industry out of control and a Government department even more so. If they intend to ruin the whole Hunter valley they should admit it, pay us all out and prevent another 50yrs of social torture so we can get out with our sanity.
