The sky over Scone Airport was abuzz with fire fighting aircraft as the NSW Rural Fire Service undertook airbase training for volunteers on Sunday.
More than 50 people were involved in the preparation for a real bushfire emergency.
Volunteers tested their skills in aircraft refuelling, water and fire retardant loading as well as airbase radio communications.
The airport, which has recently undergone rehabilitation and extension works, was the base for the Pay’s Air Service fire bombers and helicopter.
“The airport, although extremely wet, handled the activity well,” Scone Airport manager Coleen Pinkerton said.
“The ability of Scone Airport to handle this type of emergency and having Pay’s Aircraft based here at the airport is a bonus not only to [Upper Hunter Shire] but to the surrounding areas, including several National Parks,” Mrs Pinkerton said.
