Friends Josephine Barnett and Belva Richards have joined forces to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and funds for research to fight it.
They are not doing it alone.
“We couldn’t do it without everyone offering to do something like make slices,” Mrs Barnett said.
When a relative of Mrs Barnett’s was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she decided she wanted to raise awareness of the disease.
That led to a display in Singleton of christening gowns during ovarian cancer awareness month last year.
This year, she approached Mrs Richards to show some of her impressive collection of stitching, including 40 quilts.
The two have sewn together since they were students at Singleton High School.
Mrs Richards was six years old when she started embroidering, which was then called fancy work. She said she has slowed down but not stopped.
The two are still involved in the Muswellbrook Smocking Group, which meets at the old St James’ school on the third Thursday of the month from 10am onwards.
They are already thinking about an event for ovarian cancer awareness month next year.
“What are we going to come up with next year Josie?” Mrs Richards asked.
Belva’s Serendipity Collection of Embroidery, a display of 60 years of stitching, will be at the Aberdeen Bowling Club from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, February 11.
Entry is $6 which includes morning and afternoon tea. Proceeds will go to ovarian cancer research.
